50,000+ Indian organizations have been issued Legal Entity Identifiers. A Legal Entity Identifier is mandatory for all participants in the Over-the-Counter (OTC) markets for Rupee Interest Rate derivatives, foreign currency derivatives and credit derivatives in India. Your LEI must be renewed annually. Lapsed LEI will not be deemed valid for Trade Repository (TR) reporting.
Mandated by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), from April 1 2021, entities who undertake large value transactions (₹50 crore and above) using the Reserve Bank-run Centralised Payment Systems must obtain and use an LEI. RBI has asked member banks using its Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) and National Electronic Funds Transfer (NEFT) to advise entities to obtain LEI in time, if they do not already have one. LEI numbers can be issued to registered Indian companies and subsidiaries, non-profit organizations, sole proprietors, international branch offices, but also to Indian funds and trusts.
