A Legal Entity Identifier issued to a fund or trust follows the same process as Legal Entity Identifier Numbers issued for other types of legal entity or organizations.
LEIs are already required under a number of EU regulations and directives that include required compliance by structures such as funds, fund managers, trusts, partnerships and charities. Regulation includes the Alternative Investment Funds Directive (AIFMD), Solvency II for pension funds, and more. It is important to note that investment firms regulated under MiFID II, must renew their MiFID II fund or trust LEI code annually.
A client who is a legal entity or structure, including a charity or trust, need to make arrangements to obtain an LEI code if it wants the investment firm to continue to act on its instructions or make a decision to trade on its behalf from 3 January 2018 onwards.
