GMEI Utility Shut Down: Find Your New LEI Issuer and What to Do Next

GMEI Utility, one of the world’s largest LEI issuers, shut down in August 2023. All Legal Entity Identifiers it managed were transferred to other GLEIF-accredited issuers. Your LEI number has not changed, but your issuer has.

Not sure? Start with the LEI status check — it shows your current issuer and renewal date.

What happened to my GMEI Utility LEI?

When GMEI Utility closed, GLEIF managed a bulk transfer of all active LEIs to other LEI issuers. Transfers were allocated by jurisdiction of incorporation, meaning your LEI was moved to an issuer designated for your country or region.

Your LEI number itself has not changed. The 20-character identifier remains the same. Only the issuer responsible for managing your annual renewal has changed.

If you operated a corporate group with legal entities across multiple jurisdictions, it is possible that your LEIs were allocated to different issuers in each country. You may now have LEIs spread across multiple providers.

How do I find out who manages my LEI now?

The quickest way to find your current LEI issuer is to look up your LEI in the Global LEI Index using the RapidLEI LEI Search tool. Search by your company name or LEI number — your record will show your current managing issuer alongside your registration status and renewal date.

My LEI has lapsed since the GMEI Utility closure. What do I do?

If your LEI lapsed after the bulk transfer, it means renewal notices from your new issuer were not acted on, or the transfer process created a gap in renewal management.

A lapsed LEI can prevent you from trading in regulated markets, completing KYB checks, and meeting reporting obligations under MiFID II, EMIR, and other regulations. It should be resolved as quickly as possible.

Option 1: Renew with your current issuer

Log in to the platform of whichever issuer now manages your LEI. Not sure who that is? Search for your LEI first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Has my LEI number changed as a result of the GMEI Utility shutdown?
No. Your LEI number is permanent and does not change when you switch LEI issuer. The 20-character code assigned to your organisation remains the same regardless of which accredited issuer manages it.

How do I know if my LEI is still active?
Search for your company or LEI number using the RapidLEI LEI Search. Your LEI record will display the current registration status: Active, Lapsed, or Retired.

My LEI was lapsed before the GMEI shutdown. Has it been transferred?
GLEIF’s bulk transfer covered active LEIs at the time of the transfer. LEIs that were already lapsed at the point of closure may not have been transferred in the same way. Search for your LEI to check its current status and issuer. If you need help reactivating it, contact RapidLEI.

I have LEIs in multiple countries that were all with GMEI Utility. Are they all with the same new issuer?
Not necessarily. GLEIF allocated LEIs by jurisdiction of incorporation, so entities in different countries may have been moved to different issuers. Use the LEI Search to check each entity individually, or contact RapidLEI if you would like to consolidate your portfolio under one issuer.

Can I transfer my LEI to RapidLEI even if it is lapsed?
Yes. RapidLEI supports transfers of both active and lapsed LEIs. A lapsed LEI can be transferred and renewed in the same process.
