LEI Regulation Spotlight
MiCA Regulation: LEI Requirements for Crypto-Asset Service Providers and Issuers
The Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) is the EU’s harmonised framework for issuing, offering and trading crypto-assets. It brings crypto-asset service providers (CASPs) and token issuers under formal supervision.
MiCA requires these entities to be identifiable and verifiable, and the Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) is the standard it relies on to do this. Since 23 December 2025, the LEI is a mandatory field in crypto-asset white papers.
Does MiCA require an LEI?
Yes. CASPs and token issuers must identify themselves with a Legal Entity Identifier (LEI). Since 23 December 2025 the LEI is a mandatory, machine-readable field in crypto-asset white papers, which must be filed in XHTML using Inline XBRL. Where no other EU identifier exists, CASPs must also identify legal-entity clients by LEI.
Harmonised EU framework for crypto-asset issuers and service providers. Since 23 December 2025, the LEI is a mandatory identifier for CASPs and token issuers in crypto-asset white papers, consistent with MiFID II and EMIR.
The CASP transitional period ends no later than 1 July 2026. Several member states closed it earlier. After their national deadline, any firm serving EU clients on a pre-MiCA registration must hold full MiCA authorisation.
The role of the LEI under MiCA
CASPs and token issuers use the LEI for verifiable entity identification across MiCA obligations: in crypto-asset white papers, in regulatory submissions to national competent authorities and ESMA, and in AML and KYC onboarding. The white paper technical standards (Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2024/2984) make the LEI a required data field, not an optional reference, aligning crypto-asset markets with the identification regime already used under MiFID II, EMIR and SFTR.
