Understanding LEI Status and Entity Status in Search Results

ISSUED, LAPSED, and RETIRED. What each means

Issued

The LEI is active and has been renewed. Entity data is current and accepted for regulatory purposes.

Lapsed

The LEI has not been renewed by its renewal date. The data may be outdated. May not be accepted for regulatory reporting.

Retired

The entity has ceased operations (dissolved, acquired, or merged). The LEI is no longer active.

The Global LEI Index (also called the GLEIS or Global Legal Entity Identifier System) is the world’s only open, globally standardised, and publicly accessible database of entity identifiers. It is maintained by the Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation (GLEIF), a non-profit organisation established in 2014 by the Financial Stability Board and the G20.

The Global LEI Index contains over 2.5 million LEI records covering organisations, funds and trusts in more than 200 jurisdictions worldwide. All records are verified against authoritative national business registries and updated several times a day.

Common LEI Search questions

LEI search is the process of querying the Global LEI Index, the world’s open, globally standardised database of Legal Entity Identifiers to find and verify information about a legal entity. You can search by company name, LEI code, ISIN, or BIC code to retrieve verified reference data including the entity’s legal name, address, registration status, LEI status, and ownership structure.
To look up a company’s LEI number, use the search box at the top of this page. Enter some or all of the company’s legal name in the search field and click Search. The results will display all matching LEI records. Click on any result to view the full LEI record including the 20-character LEI code, registered address, entity status, and ownership data. You can also search directly by ISIN or BIC code if you have those identifiers.
To check if a company has a valid LEI, enter the company name in the search box and click Search. The results will show the LEI status. Now look for “ISSUED” to confirm the LEI is active and current. If the result shows “LAPSED”, the LEI exists but has not been renewed. If no results are found, the company does not currently hold an LEI in the Global LEI Index.

Yes. Name search is the default and most common way to use the LEI search tool to find LEIs for organisations, funds and trusts. Enter the name in the search box. 

Yes. Search by the company’s registered legal name in the LEI lookup tool. If the organisation has been issued an LEI, it will appear in the Global LEI Index regardless of whether they know their own LEI code. This is commonly used for counterparty verification and compliance checks.

An LEI lookup result shows two types of data: Level 1 data (“who is who”) includes the entity’s legal name, registered and HQ address, country, registration authority, registration number, entity type, LEI status, entity status, and LEI registration date. Level 2 data (“who owns whom”) includes the entity’s direct parent and ultimate parent, where reported, as well as any subsidiary entities.

ISSUED means the LEI is active and has been renewed and the entity data is current and the LEI is accepted for regulatory purposes. LAPSED means the LEI has not been renewed by its annual renewal date and the data may be outdated and a lapsed LEI may not be accepted for transactions or regulatory filings. RETIRED means the entity has ceased operations (dissolved, merged, or acquired) and the LEI is permanently inactive.

The Policy Conforming flag indicates that an LEI record meets GLEIF’s data quality standards — specifically that the entity data has been validated and corroborated against an authoritative source such as a national business registry. A conforming LEI record displays a green checkmark in the search results. Non-conforming records may contain entity data that has not been fully validated against an official registry source.
Level 1 data is entity reference data or the “who is who” information: legal name, address, country, registration details, and LEI status. Level 2 data is ownership structure data or the “who owns whom” information: the entity’s direct parent (immediate owner) and ultimate parent (top-level controlling entity), as well as any child entities. Level 2 data is critical for KYB onboarding, corporate group analysis, and counterparty due diligence.
Corroboration level describes how thoroughly an LEI record’s entity data has been verified. Fully Corroborated means validated against an authoritative national business registry. Partially Corroborated means some data has been verified. Entity Supplied Only means data was provided by the entity and not yet independently verified. Fully corroborated records are preferred for KYB, KYC, and regulatory reporting.
