Companies, funds, trusts and other legal entities need an LEI to trade financial instruments, report derivatives, and in many cases to complete bank onboarding and payments. Regulators worldwide use the LEI in their rules: in the UK, investment firms cannot execute a trade for an eligible client without one, and in the US, swap counterparties must obtain one under CFTC rules. GLEIF keeps a list of regulations that use the LEI. The LEI is also widely used in Know Your Business (KYB) checks and cross-border trade. Individuals acting in a personal capacity do not need one.

Most RapidLEI LEIs are issued in minutes. If company data needs additional checks, such as validating parent or fund relationships, it may take a little longer, but we almost always issue on the same day as the application.

Choose a 1, 3 or 5 year plan and create your RapidLEI account, which protects your LEI so only you can manage it. Enter your organisation’s name and we search business registries to prefill your details. You confirm your legal name, registered address and registration number, we verify them against authoritative sources, and your LEI is issued, usually within minutes.

You need the entity’s legal name, registration number, registering authority, registered and headquarters addresses and legal form. You also report the direct and ultimate parent companies, or the reason none is reported. RapidLEI retrieves most of these details from business registries during the application. Where a registry does not hold the information, as is often the case for funds and trusts, we may ask for a supporting document such as a fund prospectus or trust deed. If you apply on behalf of another organisation, you need its authority to do so, and we help you establish that.

An LEI is valid for one year and must be renewed to stay active. A lapsed LEI is publicly visible in the Global LEI Index and can cause transactions and reports to be rejected. RapidLEI multi-year auto-renewal prevents lapses, and a lapsed LEI can be reactivated at any time to restore its active status.

After an LEI is issued, it remains valid for one year and must be renewed annually to keep its active status in the Global LEI System. Our multiyear options keep the LEI active for up to five years without yearly renewals. If an LEI is not renewed, it lapses, which can cause transactions to be rejected or penalties for non-compliance. RapidLEI recommends choosing multiyear to avoid that risk, and a lapsed LEI can be renewed at any time to restore its active status.

Only the accredited issuer that manages an LEI can renew it. If your LEI is with another issuer, transfer it to RapidLEI first. Transfer is free, keeps the same LEI number and runs within GLEIF rules with no gap in coverage. Once your LEI is with RapidLEI, you can renew it up to 60 days before expiry from your RapidLEI account.

Yes. An LEI is a global identifier recognised in every jurisdiction that uses the Global LEI System. An entity needs only one LEI, wherever it trades or reports. Each entity in a group, such as a subsidiary or fund, needs its own.
